TAVIK Neon Tee

Think back to before the distractions, before the digital chaos. As an internet generation, spoiled by our desires being only a click away, the beach remains a time capsule of a slower and simpler time. Life has a way of slowing down at the beach and here at TAVIK, that's something we live by. We've rounded up 8 tees and tanks below to help get you in the Modern Beach state of mind.

TAVIK Spring Tees

Maybe Later Tee and Tank

The MAYBE LATER custom print tee represents relaxation and truly living in the moment. Defining the beach culture we live by at TAVIK, this bright teal tee features inside-out seams and a vintage wash making it feel extra soft and broken in. With a slogan and palm trees printed on the back, it reminds you if something important comes your way, you’ll get to it, but just… "maybe later”.

Never On Time T-Shirt

The NEVER ON TIME print tee represents the chill, stress-free vibes that make up the Modern Beach state of mind. At the beach, you’re never a slave to a clock. Maybe you are on time once in a while, but when you're not, we know it's for a good reason.

Nothing T-Shirt

The NOTHING t-shirt represents relaxation at it's peak- carefree and zoned out. With a graphic on the front pocket and "Nothing On My Mind" graphic on the back, this vintage washed shirt gets only better with wear and will be one of your classics for a long, long time. Put your brain on pause, and for a few moments (or maybe longer), have nothing on your mind.

Neon T-Shirt

The NEON is reminiscent of post-surf sesh diner grubbing and late night hooligan adventures. Inspired by an old beach town’s retro neon signs you still see driving up PCH at night, this t-shirt is an ode to where TAVIK originates from.
The best part about this street-look tee is it already feels like you've been wearing it for years.

TAVIK

Late Tee and Tank

One of our favorites, nothing represents the golden state of mind better than the LATE pocket tee. Made with a vintage wash for an added soft touch, a printed front pocket and, "BETTER NEVER THAN LATE" printed on the back, you'll for sure embrace the beach-goer mentality. Standing against always scrambling to keep up with your surroundings, relax instead and let what's unimportant pass on by.

Go Away T-Shirt

The GO AWAY tee welcomes you to your own Fantasy Island. This soft-feel cotton tee reads "fantasy island tavik" on the front, and has a custom drawn palm tree back print with the words "go away" faintly written above. Encouraging you to go off and do your own thing and get away from it all, you'll create your own day dream with this shirt supporting your mental escape.

Paxton Boardshorts

Looking for a pair of premium boardies to take you everywhere? Look no further. We've rounded up 6 reliable boardshorts that are guaranteed to get you through the summer. Each with their own unique features and inspiration, we've arranged them from shortest to longest in length. It's up to you to decided which one suits you best (and how much thigh you want to show).

BELMONT | 16"

Reminiscent of the 1950's surf bum days, the BELMONT boardshort is one of our shortest at 16” in length. Clean and simple, it features a subtle all over print with an elastic waistband and a rear velcro closure pocket with drainage eyelet. The BELMONT is finished with a garment wash for added softness that completes its vintage look. Pair with the Maybe Later Tank and be prepared to get a little sun on those thighs!

PAXTON | 18"

The PAXTON is your not-so-basic board short. Covered in an ultramodern print inspired by the city streets of Japan, these trunks are a piece of art that give you dynamic style. Wear to ride some waves or pair it with our Dirt Shirt Knit to take you from beach to city, and from day to night. These boardies will have you cheering "Kanpai!" (meaning "bottom's up" or "cheers" in Japanese)

Paxton

HIXON | 18"

The HIXON hybrid walkshort is one of our most unique items at TAVIK. Created with a space dye treatment (a technique used to give yarn a unique, multi-colored effect), this short can easily go from beach-wear to street-wear because of it's transferable color.  Featuring a rear flap pocket, stitch detail and a waxed branded draw-cord, this comfortable pair of multi-purpose shorts will suit any adventure.

BLEU | 19"

Using a blend of premium fabrics and TAVIK’s 4-Way Stretch Technology, the BLEU features a design that can be worn in the depths of the Moroccan ocean, the city streets of Sydney or lounging on Coastal beaches. Striking electric-blue details paired with rich charcoal colors are analogous to Corey Wilson’s renowned surf photography. Features including the side-pocket and waterproof zipper are added details that effortlessly transition from beach to street.

CoreyWilson2-1024x681

Wilson took to the colossal Pipeline waves in Oahu, Hawaii to capture the first photo featuring the TAVIK and Corey Wilson Collaboration Boardshort.

Vital | 20"

The VITAL is a men's premium 4-way stretch 20" boardshort featuring a color contrasting pocket and waistband, branded draw-cord, and high density screen print that combine for a sleek, modern look. The sonic welded (no sew) pocket with waterproof zipper keep your essentials safe in action.  Modern beach lifestyle is minimal, focusing only on what's necessary.  If premium quality and effortless style are your top priorities, these boardies are vital to your wardrobe.

Crowley | 20"

The CROWLEY, another men's premium 4-way stretch boardshort, features an all-over sublimated print, a printing technique in which the heat and pressure applied to the dye sublimates, or becomes a gas, and is then absorbed into the fibers of the garment, creating a smooth, weightless print that doesn't fade or wear out.

The patches were inspired by designer Jordan Rath's midwestern roots, reminiscent of various camps and lakes throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Crowley

The "Camp Tamarack M.B.C" (Modern Beach Culture) patch represents a lake near where Jordan grew up in Wisconsin.  The "Western District” patch represents TAVIK and the brand’s West Coast beach heritage.  Connecting these two locations was something Jordan had dreamed of while growing up, and these shorts remind you the beach is a lifestyle not a location.

The Crowley stripe is inspired by blanket lining from traditional chore jackets and barn coats, which is another way we connect the functionality of heritage workwear with modern aesthetic and design.

5 Artists You Don't Want To Miss At Bonnaroo

TAVIK Blog Bonnaroo

Headed to Bonnaroo this weekend? We've highlighted 5 of our favorite artists that are sure to put on a mind-blowingly good set.

Mumford and Sons | Saturday, 11 p.m. at What Stage

TAVIK Blog Mumford and Sons

Mumford and Sons returns to Bonnaroo as the second listed act on this year's bill.  Having been scheduled to perform in the 2013 festival, the band canceled two days before the performance when Ted Dwane had emergency surgery to remove a blood clot in his brain.

Why this is a must-see: The British rock band is making a natural shift away from the traditional banjo-heavy folk sound that has become their staple. This will be one of Mumford's first big live performances since adopting their new electric rock sound from their latest album, "Wilder Mind."

Source: The Tennessean

Odesza | Saturday, 1 a.m. at What Stage

Odesza

Odesza is the production duo formed by Harrison Mills, who previously made music as CatacombKid, and Clayton Knight, who previously made music under the name BeachesBeaches. The two became friends while attending Western Washington University and began making music together their senior year. Just months after they graduated, their first album Summer’s Gone took the world by storm.

Why this is a must-see: You're guaranteed to fall for the irresistibly dreamy and addictive drums and fathoms-deep bass that give Odesza their unique sound. As one of electronic music’s biggest breakout stories from 2015, this duo is sure to become one of the prime movers and definers for the genre in years to come. You'll get to say you saw them way back when.

Rudimental | Sunday, 6PM at This Tent

TAVIK blog Rudimental

This London based electronic group hit the charts and made a name for themselves with their number one single, Feel the Love, back in 2012. Still slightly under the radar here in the U.S., this group seamlessly blends EDM, Pop, Soul, Funk, and  R&B.  Fuse TV put it perfectly, "When you stumble into This Tent through the swampy early evening humidity on Sunday night, they might blindside you with several "holy shit" moments."

Why this is a must-see: If you've ever seen Rudimental live you know that it's sure to be a sweat-sesh. Their unique beats will have you bouncing on your toes all set long, and singing the catchy suck-in-your-head lyrics into the night. This is the perfect explosive, high energy dance tent set.

ATOMIC BOMB! BAND | Saturday, 8:15 p.m.

TAVIK Blog Atomic Bomb

Atomic Bomb! Band are a touring supergroup, formed in 2014 to perform the music of the illustrious, and radical William Onyeabor. Onyeabor was a Nigerian funk musician in the 1970’s, and self released 8 albums before declaring himself a born again Christian, vowing to never speak of himself or his music again. While the man behind the music has virtually disappeared, his legacy lives on, and his songs have more than withstood the test of time. Watch the Short film “Fantastic Man” below.

Why this is a must-see: Atomic Bomb! Band features various musicians, including Pat Mahoney (LCD Soundsystem), Money Mark (Beastie Boys), and in the past has featured guest musicians David Byrne (Talking Heads) and Damon Albarn (Blur, Gorillaz). If you enjoy the music of William Onyeabor, this might be your only chance to see it in a live setting.

REGGIE WATTS | Sunday, 1:00 p.m.

TAVIK Blog Reggie Watts

Reggie Watts has long been recognized for his musical comedy, and takes a unique and minimal approach. Carrying with him a microphone, keyboard, and looping pedal, Watts creates complex beats and rhythms, all with a humorous undertone. He is known to disorient his audience, commonly talking in cryptic phrases and accents that give the illusion of context.

Why this is a must-see: In a world of of musicians striving for success, Reggie Watts provides a refreshing, and comedic outlook. While an extremely talented musician, most of what he produces plays off of various stereotypes, tastefully mocking the industry in which he is embedded. He is, without a doubt, not one to miss.

VISIONARIES / Frankie Cuda, Shaper & Craftsman

Tavik Visionaries_Frankie Cuda

Most people have never shaped a surfboard.

There's something about visiting a shaper’s bay that says you don't need to live on the coast or get in the water each day to appreciate the craft. Maybe it’s the modern world's way of letting us connect with the ancient Vikings; taking natural materials and working with your hands to contour them into a vessel that can slide along the sea. Either which way, we were pretty inspired after a visit to our friend Frankie's shaping bay. For surf inspiration and a couple good stories, we stopped by this Aussie’s shop for a few words.

Let’s pay our respects. Where and how did you first start shaping boards?

“I first started shaping on the Gold Coast in Australia about eight years ago in a mate’s garage. He was shaping and glassing himself a tuberider for a wave called South Straddie, so I figured I'd give it a go too! I was hooked. It wasn't till about four years ago I went full time shaping, though, and just yesterday I shaped my 1600th board.”

What motivated your move from Australia?

“I first came out to California for a work trip and ended up loving the place, the lifestyle and the ladies! And with the amount of stuff to do on a day-to-day basis, it's hard to get bored around here. I haven't even done a fraction of the things I want to do and see yet.”

What keeps you here in America?

“What keeps me here? I'd have to say the babes (laughs). No, my girlfriend Erica, who I met out here, is part of what keeps me here and she'd be pissed if I were to move back home right now. She's also a professional surfer and rides my boards, which gives me a lot of good feedback as she rips. And I'm gaining a lot of traction with the brand right now, so I wouldn't want to leave and ruin what I've worked so hard building.”

What do you listen to while shaping?

“I always have music on when I’m shaping. I have an iPod with the most random mix of music, rock, punk, hip hop, electro, house and all other types of music that I could fit on that thing. But after listening to it for over a year without adding to it or cleaning out the trash, I ended up listening to the radio. It's funny how the stations play the same song about 15 times in a day so I'm beginning to get over that (might be time to update the iPod).”

Aside from boards, what is your favorite thing you’ve crafted or fabricated?

“I was a carpenter for about six years before and during my shaping career. I've built all sorts of things, but my favorite would probably be my couch at home, or my dining table bench. They’re both pretty legendary.... Oh and maybe this epic tree house when I was a Grom, but one of my mates fell out of it and broke his arm so my dad made me tear it down.”

Favorite TAVIK pieces and why?

“It’s hard to pick one favorite piece of clothing, as Tavik has such good clothes. I could list all of them, but my favorite walk shorts are the Hixon hybrid shorts (in grey). My favorite boardies are the Bleu (Corey Wilson's collab piece) as they’re buttery smooth and stretchy to surf in. Corey's also one of my best mates and makes me laugh with his famous quotes he drops regularly. And I also love the Rico boardies for lounging. Favorite tee's are the crew and youth shirts.”

Is In-N-Out better than your local pie shop back home?

“In-N-Out and my local pie shop have a special place in my heart as they satisfy even the heaviest hungers and hit the spot like nothing else. But of the two, I'd have to say my local pie shop, maybe because I haven't had one in over a year now. But there is a great Aussie style pie shop called Pie Not on 17th in Costa Mesa that I eat at regularly to keep me familiar with a good old meat pie.”

What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen happen at work?

“I’ve seen some crazy things. When I was a carpenter I saw a guy fall off a roof, which was pretty heavy. He broke a few bones but was okay. Another guy shot through his hand with a nail gun and one of my mates had a port-a-potty pushed over while he was in it. It was full so it wasn't pretty.”

If you had to pick a sister city for Newport Beach in Australia, what would it be and why?

“The Gold Coast (my hometown) has so much to do. The nightlife is all-time and goes off every night of the week. The babes are tanned and hotter than your BBQ, the waves are always pumping with not many guys out (unless you’re surfing the points) and there's awesome places to go camping/fishing/surfing close by. You can drive 15 minutes out of the city and feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere with pristine beaches and firing waves with no one in sight.”

What’s your favorite holiday?

“Favorite holiday? This one’s the easiest one of all. It's Australia Day! The most fun day of the year and I look forward to it every single year. It's a wild party where anything goes. We've had some of the best parties at our local beach park that have gotten out of hand (but all in good, safe fun).”

TAVIK MODERN_Men's Spring 2015

Orange County, CA- July 8, 2015 – TAVIK, original lifestyle brand, today announces their Men’s Spring 2016 Swim and Apparel Collections at AGENDA Long Beach.

Fusing functionality, style, fabric and fit, TAVIK’s latest Men’s collection expands on the brand’s foundation of Modern Beach Culture with the introduction of two distinct lines, MODERN and BEACH. Arrival: JFK Airport // 10:15PM

I exit the airport and get blindsided by an unfamiliar type of heat; I can't help but smile because I know I’ve made it.

Before I can even ask a stranger for a cigarette I'm thrown into a car and hauled off, confused and unsure what the next ten days have in store.

The question, ‘are you traveling for business or pleasure?’ has never made complete sense to me. It's a simple question with a complicated answer. This specific trip was a bit of both but a lot of neither. I felt like I needed to just f*cking leave, so that's what I did. Maybe the feeling to disappear is because I'm looking for something, or perhaps I'm running from something, either way I now find myself double fisting slices of margarita pizza in the middle of Manhattan; alive in every sense of the word.

Days go by and art consumes every second of what we do. Art in the museums, art in the streets, even the way the same woman glides to get her morning coffee in oversized designer garments has become art to me. I find myself missing calls and forgetting to text friends back because I'm too busy people watching. The personalities are priceless, making mycell phone pointless. I'm distracted looking up at the architecture rather than staring down at my destructive device. Occasionally, I leave my friends and the scene in SoHo to wander aimlessly, blasting Outkast’s 1998 Aquemini album and appreciating old things in a new way. The days are getting long and the nights are even longer.

One week in and my eyes burn from the lights and lack of sleep. My skin is coated in pollution and my brain is begging to be turned off temporarily. I’m beat, but not broken. At this point I know the only remedy aside from a home cooked meal is the salt from the sea. So, as usual, we make a spontaneous decision to pack up and head to the Hamptons. Six hours later I find myself aboard the Shinnecock Star, shaking hands with old fishermen I had never met and preparing to head 70 miles overnight into the Atlantic. A storm hit hard that night and the feeling hit home. I realized then on that boat what it feels like to be small in a big world. Absolutely no egos, just strangers genuinely helping strangers while naturally becoming friends along the way. The type of shit a place like Orange County forgets to teach us. Cheers to that crew for the best nightmare I’ve ever had.

Responsibilities finally catch up with me as I juggle priorities, count my pennies and gather the last bits of inspiration. I know by now it’s time to get back to real life. Time to reply to emails. Time to pay rent. And time to check my bank account.

Tavik Swimwear Blog

Premier online retailer and our Southern California neighbors, Vida Soleil, have been incredible partners of TAViK Swimwear. And when we announced our swimwear is exclusively Made In California, they wanted to know more. In this interview, they chatted with TAViK Swimwear designer Carly Osler to understand what inspired this incredible change and what influences Carly's design process.

VS: What was your first design job and how did you get started with Tavik?

CO: "My path is little bit different than most designers. I’ve worked in many different avenues of the fashion industry, which gave me a lot of insight into many aspects of the business. I have had roles in Visual Merchandising, Product Development and ran a Sales Showroom before making the move to LA. Through networking and my Tumblr, Tenshadesofgrey.tumblr.com (named before the book!) TAVIK’s founder noticed me, and design became the next chapter of my career!"

VS: What drove you to become a swim designer?

CO: "For as long as I can remember, I have been obsessed with fashion trends and design, fashion in general. I would say it’s the possibility of being creative every day and being able to execute the ideas into a product that people are excited to wear and own. Since I’m from Canada, I always dreamed of palm trees and warm sunsets while growing up and I love designing swimwear that allows girls to live out these dreams."

Tavik Swimwear Designer Carly Osler

{Tavik Swimwear Designer, Carly Osler}

VS: Hometown:

CO: "I grew up in Kelowna BC, Canada. It’s a beautiful desert lake town that surprisingly gets hot in the summer!"

VS: What inspires you the most for your patterns and cuts?

CO: "It varies each season but a lot of my inspo stems from women and men’s street style as well as fashion shows. I am constantly creating mental photos no matter where I am or what I am doing."

VS: One of our favorite local brands, what is your favorite thing to do in your spare time here in Orange County?

CO: "Whenever I’m not working I make sure to spend time with my fiancé and my girlfriends. My wedding is only 3 months away, so you will currently find me at Grit Cycle and Equinox. I also love riding my bike to the beach and weekend brunching, usually accompanied by a glass of rosé. Oh and of course, shopping."

VS: Favorite place to eat around here?

CO: "I’m a foodie so it’s hard to pick just one… For lunch: Green Leaf, Tender Greens, and the Urth Café that recently opened a Laguna Beach location. Dinner spots: Gulfstream, San Shi Go or Sushi Sho, The Crowbar, and anywhere with a rooftop for happy hour."

VS: Before Tavik was not always made in the U.S. what drove you guys to have it all manufactured here in the U.S.?

CO: "Ultimately, I think the overarching reason was to be closer to our product. With domestic production, we are able to be way more hands-on with our swimwear. We pride ourselves on quality, fit and delivering on time. With production so close, we get to touch and feel the fabrics, and actually try the fits, real time, while working with our factory and fit technicians. We feel lucky to be able to hold fittings at the factory so we can make any fit changes right away. Our relationship with our factory is more familiar than a business relationship because we all care, and put so much TLC into our suits. We aim for our customer to experience this dedication so they have confidence when they wear them. We want to cater to those customers who are looking for special swimwear pieces with a great fit, and who really appreciate where the product comes from."

VS: Typical day at the office is like?

CO: "I’m a morning person, but, I have to have my Starbucks. I get inspired each morning by listening to music or a podcast; I’ve loved Man Repeller’s – Monocycle lately. The best part about my job is that every day is different. Depending on the day, I sketch designs, style shoots, post on social outlets, and attend swim fittings. I eat lunch most days at work, prepared by our in house talent, Chef Carlos."

VS: Favorite Travel spot or most desired place to go to?

CO: "My happy place is Palm Springs. Being Canadian, I love anywhere with palm trees and a pool. Apart from that, I’ve always wanted to go to the Amalfi Coast, and this September we are lucky enough to go for our honeymoon!"

VS: What describes your style and design best?

CO: "I usually gravitate towards a monochromatic palette. My closet consists of basics that I know will work day after day, accented by a few investments in well-made and on trend pieces – usually shoes, boots, purses and jackets. I do my shopping late at night on the computer; I’m a vigorous online shopper. I’ve also been lucky enough to be surrounded by various talented female friends in the industry which definitely influences my style too. Splitting my time between two countries, I feel lucky to have the city influence of Vancouver mixed with LA’s modern boho vibes."

Can You Swim On Your Period? Things To Keep In Mind 2022

It’s a common question that many women have – Can you swim on your period? The answer is yes!

However, there are a few things to keep in mind when swimming on your period, such as using a tampon or menstrual cup and wearing a dark-colored swimsuit. But other than that, there’s no reason why you can’t enjoy a dip in the pool or ocean during your period.

Let’s be with Tavik to get more detailed information through this blog post.

Top Things You Need To Know About Swimming During Your Period

  • It’s not unhygienic to swim while you’re on your period.
  • You won’t leave any bloody trail in the water.
  • While swimming, you can use a tampon or sponge from a menstrual cup.

Many people ask us if swimming while having their period is okay. Are you likely to get severe cramps, an infection, or even be eaten by sharks while swimming? It is unlikely.

You can still swim when your period is over if you love swimming.

You can still choose to eat pizza on the couch, but that is also an option. For all your questions about period swimming, read on.

Can You Swim On Your Period?

swimming during periods

The short answer is yes, you can swim on your period. “People often believe you can’t go swimming on your period,” says Dr. Helen O’Neill, a world-renowned expert in reproductive science, CEO of Fertility Health and founder of Fertility Health.

However, period products, such as tampons or menstrual cups, have allowed women to go swimming without fear of accidental leaks.

It’s okay to go for a dip when you’re wearing a tampon, menstrual cup, or another sanitary product. Dr. O’Neill recommends that you avoid using a sanitary towel and liner because they could absorb water.

You should not swim in the pool when you have periods. This was supposed to be done to protect swimmers from menstrual blood contamination. However, it is essential to remember that swimming while menstruating does not risk anyone’s health.

Will I Leave A Bloody Trail In The Water?

While water pressure can temporarily stop your flow while you swim, it can cause blood to come out if you cough, laugh, sneeze, or otherwise move around. It won’t usually be noticeable, which is the good news. Your period will return to normal once you get out of the water.

It’s best to use a tampon while swimming. Pantyliners and pads are not a good choice as they absorb water and can become ineffective. They can be kept in the cup for as long as 12 hours to be used longer than tampons.

Swimming With A Cup, Sponge or Tampon

If you don’t have or can’t use a tampon or an alternative product such as a sponge or menstrual cups, there are a few options. To prevent staining, absorbent swimwear can be worn.

Waterproof absorbent swimwear looks like regular bikini bottoms but has a hidden leak-proof lining to absorb menstrual blood. A pad can be worn before or after swimming.

Am I Going To Be Eaten By Sharks?

Am I Going To Be Eaten By Sharks?

Many individuals are terrified of sharks while swimming in the ocean because of renowned films like Jaws. Period blood may attract sharks, hence some women with periods are advised not to swim in the ocean during their periods. Sharks have never been known to attack someone who is on their period.

Many people can safely dive while menstruation, according to the International Shark Attack File. More research is needed, however, no trend of increased attacks on divers during their periods has been discovered.

Marie Levine, the Shark Research Institute‘s Founder and Executive Director, has been diving for decades without incident. “I even received my period while diving with a school of hammerhead sharks—the sharks were not interested,” she told Mother Jones.

Can I Catch An Infection From Swimming During My Period?

Although it is unlikely that you will get a vaginal infection from swimming, the risk of infection increases if you go wild swimming.

Dr. O’Neill says that swimming in polluted waters can increase your risk of skin irritation and a Urinary Tract Infection. The likelihood of infection and irritation can be increased by wearing a wet bathing suit for long periods after your swim.

She says, “It is always recommended that you take a shower after swimming and change into clean, dry clothing to prevent this from happening.”

Swimming in contaminated water can lead to skin infections and stomach problems.

Swimming pool chlorine can sometimes irritate the vulva or vagina. This can lead to yeast infections (BV) and other health problems. Don’t panic if this happens. Take a shower right away after swimming in a chlorinated pool. And don’t wear wet swimwear.

Dr. O’Neill reminds swimmers to consult their doctor if they experience unusual itching, burning, or discharge after swimming.

Can Swimming Make My Cramps Worse?

Low-intensity exercise, such as swimming, can help relieve cramps. Your body releases endorphins during exercise, which act as natural painkillers. Dr. Welsh says that it can be beneficial to move your body while on your period and do some swimming.

Research has actually shown that regular exercise can be very effective in preventing premenstrual symptoms (PMS).

Can I Delay My Period Until After I Go Swimming?

Combination hormonal contraceptives, such as those used in typical cases, allow you to skip your period or delay it by starting your next pack immediately. This will either delay your period or give you time to take the placebo pills.

Dr. O’Neill explains that if you’re on hormonal contraception, such as the combined oral contraceptive pills, your doctor may recommend two consecutive packets (‘back-to-back’) to avoid the hormone-free period where you’d usually experience a withdrawal bleed.

If you are taking the progesterone-only contraceptive pills, taking them back to back will not cause your period to be delayed. Talk to your GP to discuss switching to the combined oral contraceptive pills or another medication that may delay your period.

Your doctor may prescribe you norethisterone, which you can take three days before your period starts if you aren’t taking any oral contraceptives. This can be taken up to 20 days. Once you are done with it, your period will begin.

Do People Know That I Have My Period? What If My Bikini Gets Stained?

No one needs to know that you’re on your period while swimming. You can wear a dark swimsuit if you are concerned about leaks or stains. Or, you can tell a friend to alert you and let you go swimming.

How Do I Know If I Started My Period?

The first period can be short or very long. You may see a lot of red spots or a bright red patch. Your period will usually last between 2-7 days. Your period is part of your menstrual cycle. They typically occur every 21-45 calendar days. During the first few years, the frequency and length of periods can change.

Each person has a different body. You might notice some changes in your body before you get your first period.

  • Nipples/Breasts
  • Pubic Hair
  • The Body Shape
  • Fluid underwear

Track your period by marking the day that you bleed in Clue. You will be able to better understand your body by keeping track of your period.

How to Wakesurf: A Simple Guide to Getting Started 2022

Have you ever seen someone effortlessly glide across the water on a surfboard, with no waves in sight?

If so, you were probably witnessing the magic of wake surfing. Wake surfing is a relatively new watersport that is quickly gaining popularity. It’s a great way to enjoy the water and get a workout at the same time.

If you’re interested in trying wake surfing, in this article, Tavik will provide a simple guide on How to Wakesurf.

What You’ll Need to Wakesurf?

What You'll Need to Wakesurf - wake surfing how to

Of course, you’ll need a boat to go wake surfing, but what else do you need? You’ll need your boardshorts or swimsuit, a wake surf board, a wake surf rope, and, maybe most importantly, a life jacket that fits properly.

If you have any other questions concerning wake surfing boats, see our wake surfing boat setup guide. # What to Wear If You’re Going Wakesurfing

It’s essential to be prepared before getting out on the lake. The first step is deciding what to wear. A swimsuit is self-evident, but there are a few things to remember.

While you may want to flaunt your summer physique, going for a swimsuit with more excellent coverage will assist in keeping you safe. Keep in mind that you’ll be wearing a life jacket, so pick a swimsuit that is supportive and comfortable beneath it.

Wakesurfers who are new to the sport may consider donning a wetsuit or rashguard. You’ll probably spend more time in the water as a novice, which might be cold depending on where you are. More covering also ensures you are more protected in the event of a fall.

A life jacket is likely the most crucial gear you’ll wear when wake surfing. Life jackets will not only keep you afloat, but they will also protect you if you fall. Make sure you have a life jacket rated for size and weight and approved by the Coast Guard.

How to Choose a Beginner Wakesurf Board?

Choosing the correct beginning wake surfboard can help you learn faster while also allowing you to have more fun. Beginner wake surfers place a greater emphasis on stability and predictability than on speed and pop.

Wakesurf boards in the form of a surfboard with a greater surface area and a reliable three-fin layout are recommended. This will give you the most solid and forgiving base from which to learn the fundamentals.

Construction and buoyancy are two additional characteristics of novice wake surfers. Beginner boards are often composed of less buoyant materials, allowing them to sit lower in the water for slower speeds and better stability.

You may get to super poppy and simply agile boards from there. Check out our wake surf board buying guide for more information.

Get the Right Equipment

how to wake surfing behind boat

If you’re just getting started in wake surfing, look for “beginning boards.” Wakesurfing boards come in various shapes and sizes, and versions designed for more experienced riders might be challenging to learn to ride. Physically, the variations are minor but noticeable in how they interact with riders.

The Tie: Believe it or not, rope selection is vital, and a wake surfing rope differs from a wakeboarding rope, which differs from a ski rope.

Wakesurfing ropes are thicker, shorter, and have a well-padded grip. Some even feature knots to assist beginner riders in getting into the “sweet spot” of the wave, which we’ll describe later.

You’ll also require a personal flotation device, such as a life jacket or a PFD. Modern PFDs resemble down vests rather than the blocky foam pieces you may recall.

How to Wakesurf?

  • Sit in the water with your toes and heels on the board’s edge.
  • Allow your knees to come into your chest as the board moves, and dig your heels down.
  • Maintain a bend in your knees until the board flips up to your feet and your weight is supported by the board.
  • Gently stand up and place your heels on the board.

Relax and let the boat do the job is the most popular advice offered to beginner wake surfers. If you’re having trouble getting up, this may be annoying advice, but it’s real!

It’s all about your setup and patience to get started. Sitting in the water with your feet propped up on the board, push your heels into the board until it flips up to your feet and the boat starts pulling you up.

Stay patient after your feet are securely planted on the board, and bend your knees as you crouch down, leaning into the rope as your weight shifts over the board. You may slowly stand up after you’re totally over the board.

Beginner wake surfers often push too hard to force their feet into the board rather than allowing the boat’s pull to flip it up.

Another typical blunder is attempting to pull yourself up. This may work in some instances, but as you gain strength, losing your equilibrium and falling is simple.

While patience is essential, you don’t want to be too comfortable, laying back and staring at the sky; instead, you want to bend your knees and maintain an athletic posture while allowing the boat to draw you up.

How to Drop the Rope Wakesurfing?

How to Drop the Rope Wakesurfing

It’s time to climb into that wave and drop the rope after you’ve gotten up! Once you’ve moved into the wave’s pocket, the wave’s push is enough to keep you riding, and you won’t need the handle to keep you moving.

When attempting to catch that wave and drop the rope, there are a few things to keep in mind.

The first and most critical stage is to maintain proper posture; if you’re all squished up, you won’t be able to move about quickly and place yourself in the wave.

Check whether you’re standing up straight and not bending down at the waist. Place your backhand (not the one holding the handle) on your lower back, push forward, and straighten your posture to do a “posture check.”

As you gain a feel for moving about on the wave, having someone on the boat manage the slack in your rope is beneficial. They’ll assist in smoothing any motions, so you won’t be dragged off your board if your slack runs out soon.

It’s time to chuck the rope after you are comfortable surfing with a consistently slack line. To avoid being entangled in the rope, toss it back into the boat or over to the opposite side of the wave.

How to Control Your Speed Wakesurfing & Stay in the Wave?

How to Control Your Speed Wakesurfing & Stay in the Wave

When wake surfing, changing how you weigh your feet might assist you in regulating your speed. In other words, your front foot acts as a gas pedal.

To accelerate, put more weight on your front foot; to slow down, put more weight on your rear foot. Weighting your toes can also help you speed faster by forcing you into the wave, while pressing your heels would do the reverse. Turn up into the wave to keep your speed and remain in the wave, then drop back down to gain up speed.

If you’re having trouble remaining in the wave and being dumped out the back, consider jumping back into it after you’ve dropped down.

Similarly, if you feel like you’re losing the wave, you should crank it up rather than down so you can drop back down and gain up speed. You’ll be surfing like a pro after you’ve mastered these motions.

How to do a Pump Trick?

This is an intermediate technique that will assist you in generating speed and bouncing. You’ll be able to perform 180s, 360s, and other stunts after mastering this skill.

If you don’t have the rope, you’ll have to rely on your rear foot to get to the top of the wake.

Then you step down the wake by putting your weight on your front foot.

To produce speed, try doing this method.

5 Wakesurf Tricks You Can Try Today To Up Your Game

Wakesurf Tricks You Can Try Today To Up Your Game

Carving

The carve technique is one of the finest “tricks” a wakesurfer can master. It’s not only a fun method to surf the wake, but it also serves as a solid basis for many more complex tricks down the road, so it’s definitely one worth mastering.

Carving is about a smooth, back-and-forth action that allows you to rock along with the wake at your own speed. Place yourself in the middle of the board to begin.

Drop back and ride the wave up by turning your board’s nose up toward the crest of the wave (slightly pushing your front foot forward)—then swing back down by pushing your back foot toward the boat.

This will result in a light back-and-forth motion that will allow you to easily ride the wave. The last push with your back will result in a little spray explosion… a pleasant visual flourish, particularly on a hot day.

Floating

The wake surfer’s equivalent of walking on water is floatation or rising to “stand” at the wave’s crest. It involves many of the same fundamental motions as carving.

In fact, the arrangement is almost identical! The only difference between the two maneuvers is the follow-through. Rather than instantly moving your rear foot toward the bottom of the wave, attempt to keep your foot position as you reach the top of the wake.

If you can hold it for a few seconds while applying minimal pressure to your front foot, you’ll seem to be floating effortlessly at the wave’s crest!

Grab the rail

Another essential tactic is the rail grab, which may be used for various things (including the fire hydrant, which we’ll look at after today’s list).

You want to feel comfortable gripping the edge of your board with your hand as a wake surfer, and that’s all the rail grab includes. Grab the front of your board while crouching low and keeping your legs close to your torso.

Take a leaf from the surfer’s book and grasp with your right hand if your left foot is in front (or vice versa), but that’s just the beginning. Once you’ve mastered this maneuver, you’ll understand when and where to hold your board for the most traction and control.

Many people are surprised to learn that wake surfing is not a no-hands sport! Because you’re not clutching a rope as you would during wakeboarding or waterskiing, you’re free and encouraged to use your hands as guides when surfing.

You may even put your palm in the water to slow down or practice a complex action, like the 360 turns.

The rail grab is one of the numerous surf-inspired movements that may improve your on-the-water technique while earning you big style points.

Hang fifteen

Hanging five or ten is a really thrilling experience. To hang five is to ride your board with one foot (also known as five toes) toeing the front edge of the board, whereas to hang 10 is to ride with both feet up front. However, five is a bit simpler, to begin with, so that’s the one to start with!

You may do this technique at any point while on board, but it’s a bit simpler if you start with the rope still in your hand (before tossing it back and can stand on your own). Slowly move your front foot forward until your toes are barely above the board’s front edge while clutching the rope.

You may let go of the rope after finding a comfortable rhythm. It may take a few attempts before you can hang five for more than a few seconds, but you’ll get there eventually. And boy, was it all worth it!

You’ll not only get to experience the unique perspective point of being upfront—almost as if you’re soaring through the air—but also seem seriously in command, adding to the fashionable part of this sport we all adore.

Hydrant for fire

We warned you that the rail grab would be helpful! Stick one leg and one arm into the air for this exciting feat while the opposite hand grabs the board, and the opposite foot is put on it.

There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, but many wake surfers have found success by lowering their body first, then grabbing the rail with their front foot.

What is the primary goal of this ruse? Have a blast! It looks nice, and you feel fantastic doing it as if you’re playing a water-based Twister game.

What Is the Best Way to Get Air?

Best Way to Get Air

To acquire adequate speed, drift back into your sweet zone and give two to three solid pumps.

Come down on your front foot weight and do a big bottom turn on your final pump.

Come up to the top of the wake and turn around. As you climb, keep your front foot light and ride up until the whole board is off the wake.

You may begin to put more weight on your front foot as you go down the wake. Your rear foot will rise up and even out over the lip due to this.

You’ll want to ensure that both your rear and front feet land even initially. Distribute your weight equally between your rear and front feet.

FAQs About How To Wake Surf

How do you execute a 360-degree turn?

Return to your sweet spot, somewhere between the center and outside of the wake.

Get one or two suitable pumps in, or as many as possible, to produce speed.

Lift your front foot off the wake surf board and lift your nose off the board. Next, you sink your backhand into the wake while simultaneously pushing your back foot out.

This will loosen it up, allowing you to turn your body from left to right.

As you grow more comfortable in your 360s, you’ll notice that you’re shifting your weight from front to back.

Conclusion

After testing out various ways to wake surf, we’ve come to the conclusion that the best ways to wake surf are by using a wake surf board with fins, or by using a wake surf board without fins. No matter what your skill level, wake surfing is a great way to enjoy the water and get a workout. So get out there and give it a try!

Bad Things About Swimming: The Worst Exercise Ever 2022

$
0
0

There are many things to be aware of when swimming, including the possibility of getting sunburned, getting dehydrated, or swallowing too much water. However, there are also some dangers that are less well-known. Here are 17 bad things about swimming that you should be aware of.

17 Disadvantages And Risks of Swimming (Stay Informed!)

17 Disadvantages of swimming

1. Swimming pools have chlorine

Because chlorine is a strong disinfectant, chlorine is often used in pools. High chlorine levels can lead to eye irritation, dry skin and headaches.

Swimming goggles may help to prevent irritation from the eyes. However, your skin, hair and ears will still be exposed. Inhaling chlorine can also cause respiratory problems and increase the risk of developing asthma.

2. Common Injuries

Swimming has several disadvantages. Swimmers are more susceptible to specific injuries. Because of the repetitive movements involved in different strokes, this is a common problem. These are the most common injuries in swimming:

Tendinitis and shoulder impingement, as well as injuries to the shoulders.

  • Knee injuries
  • Low back and neck injuries.
  • Biceps tendinitis.

These can all be caused by a combination or a combination of several things, such as:

  • Insufficient rest between swimming sessions.
  • Bad stroke technique.
  • Poor breathing technique
  • Poor condition and strength in the core, hips and shoulders.

3. Unwanted Weight Gain

One of the lesser-known drawbacks to swimming is weight gain. Scientists discovered that colder water causes higher levels of hunger than warmer.

Participants who were exposed to colder water ate up to 44% more calories. This was even though their caloric expenditure was relatively the same as those who swam in warmer waters.

Another study concluded that swimmers have higher adipose levels (simply energy stored as fat) than bikers and runners.

4. There is a risk of drowning

Swimming can be scary if you are just starting to learn how to swim. For beginners, drowning will be their number one fear.

Swimming in a pool is safer than swimming in open water. However, swimming in open waters like the oceans, lakes or rivers can be dangerous. The main dangers are the current lack of experience and unfamiliarity with how the currents interact with our bodies.

Swimming in open water is dangerous because of the currents and the possibility of being pulled underwater.

why swimming is bad

5. Dehydration

Swimming requires all of your major muscles to be active. This causes you to sweat and lose fluids like other intense exercises. It’s challenging to feel and notice that you’re actually sweating underwater.

It may seem strange to most people, but it can happen. This can lead to a loss or imbalance of electrolytes. As you might know, the body’s healthy functioning depends on proper electrolytes balance.

6. Fungal Infections

Another disadvantage to swimming is fungal infections. The athlete’s foot is a common fungal infection that swimmers experience. It is highly contagious and can spread quickly.

A yeast infection is another concern, particularly for women. This is usually caused by high humidity, heat, and swimming water.

7. Bacterial Infections

Water can contain many pathogens and bacteria. Some bacteria can survive even in well-chlorinated water bodies.

The swimmer’s ear is a common bacterial infection. This infection usually occurs when water remains in the ear canal for too long. This allows bacteria to grow and infect your ears.

8. Tiredness and Fatigue

Many people feel tired after swimming in the ocean, especially at night. This phenomenon can be explained in many ways.

Sun exposure may be the reason people feel tired after swimming. One study showed that people who spend a lot of time outdoors and are exposed to the sun have lower cognitive functions.

Another theory states that cold water causes us to burn more energy to maintain our core temperature. This makes us more tired than usual.

It is also believed that many people swim before breakfast and go to work early. Swimming after a prolonged period of fasting may lead to fatigue.

9. Polluted water

body transformation after swimming

Swimming in polluted water is a significant disadvantage, especially for those who swim in rivers, lakes and oceans. You can continuously swim in water polluted by human and animal wastes, garbage, germs and other contaminants.

Avoid swimming in polluted water near industrial plants, wastewater treatment plants or other points. You could get skin, eye, and stomach infections and open wounds.

10. People pee in the pools

It is well-known that many people pee in the water. This can lead to health problems such as asthma and other respiratory issues. If chlorine levels drop below certain levels, disinfecting the water may not be sufficient.

11. Winter swimming

For many, swimming in winter is difficult. Particularly if you are swimming in rivers, oceans, or lakes. It can be dangerous to swim in cold water. It could lead to:

  • Hypothermia.
  • Sudden heart attack.
  • The capacity to swim is reduced.
  • Hyperventilation.

12. Saltwater

When we go to the ocean for the first time as children, the one thing that we are told is to not drink the water.

Salt can be consumed with food in small quantities, but saltwater from the oceans and seas can cause health problems.

Salt water is much more dangerous because it has a higher salt content. Saltwater intake can lead to other health problems, and excessive amounts can lead to death.

13. Cramps

Cramps Swimming

Swimming can also pose a risk for cramps. These cramps can occur for three reasons, depending on how often you swim, your lifestyle and how you swim.

It is usually caused by:

  • Dehydration and loss of electrolytes
  • Too much swimming.
  • Inadequate conditioning

14. Bumping into Foreign Objects

It is possible to encounter different types of sea creatures and rocks while swimming in open water.

Sharks, for instance, are a genuine danger to beachgoers. Other animals, such as jellyfish, crabs and sea urchins, can be dangerous.

It is possible to step on or hit your legs against rocks, especially if you’re swimming in shallow water. This can lead to some minor injuries, but it is possible to get some bruises or wounds.

15. Sun Exposure

The increased sun exposure when swimming is last but not least. You’ll likely be in the sun more often if you swim in an outdoor pool or open water.

The cooling effects of water will help mask the fact that your skin is exposed to the sun’s relentless rays. This can cause severe sunburns, as well as skin cancer.

This can cause severe skin problems, especially for those with ashen skin or prone to blistering quickly.

16. Swimming can be expensive.

Many sports and activities require a financial investment. A gym membership is necessary if you enjoy going to the gym. You’ll need to purchase running shoes if you enjoy running.

Swimming alone isn’t expensive, but it can add up if your goal is to compete or improve your recreational swimmer skills.

These essentials you will need to know if you wish to learn swimming.

  • This fee is not mandatory for everyone.
  • Swimming goggles.
  • Swimsuit.

It shouldn’t cost too much each year, and it’s a significant investment considering all the benefits of swimming. It is also cheaper than other sports.

However, if you want to improve your swimming, you must invest in other equipment. This can make it more costly. These can include:

  • Membership in a swim club or coaching.
  • You will need swimming gear, such as a fin, snorkel, paddles and a pool buoy.

The coaching will be the most costly part of any of the items mentioned above, regardless if you are swimming competitively or recreationally. The best thing about coaching is that you will most likely receive an excellent facility from practicing.

However, competitive swimming can be very costly. You’ll need to pay for the following items as a competitive swimmer:

Tech suits and goggles for racing gear. These are usually quite costly.

  • Register with your local/national swimming association.
  • Swimming meet/ competition fees.
  • Travel fees may apply for competitors in larger/further away events and meets.
  • For strength training, there are additional fees to the gym.

These things can add up and make competitive swimming one of the most expensive traditional sports.

17. Competitive swimming can be very time-consuming.

Although exercise is essential to our lives, everyone should get at least 20 minutes of aerobic exercise each day. According to the Mayo Clinic, swimmers train for much longer than that.

While this is not bad, it can limit your social interaction with friends or allow you to study for exams and tests if you’re still at school.

Non-professional competitive swimmers train for at least 9 hours per semaine, which isn’t bad. But, that number could easily be pushed up to 20+ hours per week. This is where I find myself right now. This includes strength training and swimming.

Professional swimmers will train for around 30-35 hours each week, spread over several daily training sessions. However, this is your job, and you’re being paid to compete.

You can also add extra time driving to the pool and foam rolling to loosen muscles and get ready for training.

For the average swimmer, or someone just trying to keep fit and healthy, swimming laps isn’t too expensive. Swimming laps can be a great way to get in aerobic exercise and strengthen all your major muscles.

Intermediate and advanced swimmers can swim 20-30 laps per minute for beginners.

All that being said, I must mention that swimming has taught me to be efficient and plan ahead. This skill is handy in today’s society, where many distractions surround us.

This will be especially beneficial for younger swimmers, as it will teach them how to focus their time on the most important tasks each day to accomplish their tasks.

Swim Season: 3 Ways Pool Chlorine Harms Swimmers’ Health

Ways Pool Chlorine Harms Swimmers' Health

1. Asthma and Allergies

A chlorinated pool can cause asthma and allergies in competitive swimmers. Competitors who start swimming in chlorinated pools early are more likely to develop asthma, allergies, or bronchiolitis.

It is most likely caused by toxic compounds formed when chlorine reacts with organic materials such as lotions, cosmetics, and urine.

These compounds are called disinfection Byproducts or Chloramines. They also cause a pool smell, the strong chlorine odor we associate indoor pools with.

Breathing in disinfection byproducts can lead to allergies, asthma, or a condition called Lifeguard Lung, which causes persistent cough.

2. Eye and skin irritation

Swimming in chlorinated pools can cause dry, itchy skin and red eyes. This discomfort can also be caused by disinfection products. This could be due to your child or yourself coming home from swimming with reddened eyes or skin irritations.

3. Stomach Illness

Many people believe chlorine kills all germs immediately. However, many illness-causing contaminants are resistant.

Cryptosporidium Parvum, a typical water disease that can cause severe gastrointestinal illness and spreads quickly, is often found in public swimming pools.

Although these illnesses aren’t caused by chlorine, it is dangerous to assume that chlorine will protect swimmers. Many public pools today have secondary sanitation systems to protect swimmers.

Know What’s Best for Your Young Swimmer

Know What's Best for Your Young Swimmer

1. Rest

Overhead activities are prohibited for athletes who participate more than three months out of each year. Parents should encourage their children to try other sports, especially ones that do not involve overhead activities.

2. Warmup

Make sure your swimmer is adequately warmed up. Going into a swimming pool with your skin still cold is not a good idea. It is also essential to choose the right type of warmup.

It is vital to ensure that warm-ups are not passive. To warm up their arms, swimmers use a variety of traditional stretches.

Warm-ups that target the shoulder joints are essential to keep them stable. You must warm up and stretch the muscles, not just the shoulder joint.

3. Hydration

Make sure you drink lots of water. Swimming in a pool can dehydrate your body, especially with all the sweating and exercise.

4.Stop listing:

  • Incorrect swimming form
  • Training without rest days is excessive.
  • Every stroke is the same.

  • Red light – This is a bad sign if soreness persists for more than 2 days or becomes worse and/or sharp

(If the item is considered a red light, it should be reported to a physician.)

6. What’s the deal?

  • Young Kids Age: 5-9

FAQs About Problems In Swimming

FAQs ABout Problems In Swimming

1. How do you test for safe chlorine levels in a pool?

You can do a smell test. Dr. Uren states that it is perfectly normal to smell chlorine when entering an indoor swimming pool area.

Suppose the smell is strong and it causes irritation to your eyes or respiratory system. In that case, the chemicals in the pool are unbalanced. According to the CDC, healthy pools don’t have strong chemical smells.

Water Quality & Health Council recommends using a test strip for checking the pH and chlorine levels. According to the CDC, a healthy pH should be between 7.2 and 7.8.

This allows for the prevention of side effects from chlorine while killing germs. The safe chlorine level in a pool should not exceed 1 part per million (ppm).

How high is the acceptable chlorine level to swim? The acceptable level of chlorine for swimming depends on the person being asked.

According to the Water Quality & Health Council, it is from 1 to 5 ppm. So, for example, 10ppm chlorine is unsafe to swim in.

2. How to avoid side effects from too much chlorine?

These tips help you avoid the unpleasant side effects of chlorine.

If the water is not safe, stay out of it

Don’t swim in unmaintained pools.

Wash Your Face Before You Go Swimming

Signs at public pools ask you to wash off your clothes in the shower before entering the water. Do it! According to the CDC, you only need to rinse your body for one minute.

Also, make sure to get your hair wet. Dr. Ovits states that soaking the hair in fresh water is a good idea since the shaft of the hair absorbs less chlorine water. Goggles and swim caps are good options to protect your hair.

Moisturize After Swimming

Dr. Ovits advises that you don’t apply sunscreen to your skin before entering a pool.

She says that after you’ve finished with the pool, it’s the perfect time to apply a moisturizer. You should look for one that contains ceramides.

Conclusion

Swimming is a great way to stay in shape and have fun, but there are some disadvantages and risks associated with it.

First, swimming in open water can be dangerous because of the possibility of getting lost or being pulled underwater by currents.

Second, swimming in pools can also be risky because of the possibility of getting sick from the chlorine or other chemicals in the water.

Finally, even though swimming is a great workout, it is important to remember that it is still possible to overdo it and injure yourself.
